Wonder-wear!

Filed under: Europe, Random, Vacation — Shiz @ 9:03 pm

I don’t think I ever had a chance to post about one of my favorite finds for my Europe trip - disposable underwear!  Onederwear was one of those brilliant buys and one of the must-have items I recommend for those on a long journey.  They have several different kinds - bikini, brief and thongs which gives you your typical underwear choices so you can pick the one closest to what you usually wear.  I took with me 3 packs, which was 15 pairs of underwear for 6 weeks.  Let me explain.

The packs arrive already in ready-to-throw-in-your-pack form.  Each individual underwear is packaged in a small plastic bag, rolled tightly.  There are 5 pairs in a pack which are also packaged quite tightly.  I know my first concern was that disposable meant plastic, or diaper or uncomfortable feeling but its not that way at all!  They are made out of 100% cotton and because they are disposable, they are made a little thinner than your typical cotton underwear.  Here are the benefits:  1) they are more lightweight (less to carry!), 2) they are softer and very comfortable (no need to wash first) and 3) they dry quicker (you know, you wash in the shower with you, dry it on your bed and its good to go the next day).

No need to buy those expensive underwear at the sporting goods store for traveling (you know the one - its labeled something about 36 countries in 6 weeks on 2 pairs of underwear or something) just pack some of these bad boys and you’re good to go.  Mine on average has lasted 5 washings and if you need to toss one - since its one-derwear and disposable, there’s no guilt!

I think I caught something on my final days in Europe. I knew I felt strange in Heathrow and the few days I was at home didn’t help either considering I didn’t get much sleep. I’ve been a bit under the weather to say the least and thus haven’t had much energy to post. After taking some Korean medicine yesterday and downing this drink all the old people were drinking, I’m starting to feel a little better, thank god.

Day 1 consisted of travel to Seoul and Dongdaemoon for some crazy shopping. But before we went off to shop, my dear friend Kate took us to this amazing 5 layer fat pork Korean BBQ place… it was amazing. Makes Manna back home look like child’s play. We take our shoes off at the entrance and sit on the floor (poor T and his inflexibility) and they have these long snout-like metal things they pull down to vent all the smoke. No messing around here. Its all pork, dukmandoo, kimchee and other mushrooms that are grilled on this huge, iron grill that has had years and layers of tasty goodness cooked on them. You wrap in many different kinds of leaves, some I haven’t seen before and the cooked kimchee was amazing. At the end, they cut up the remaining kimchee, and add rice, egg and dried seaweed to complete kimchee fried rice… OMG!

After, we took the subway (thank god for my Europe experience which helped with navigating this system) to Dongdaemoon which is a serious shopping area, again, the faint hearted need not apply.  The clothes here are CHEAP, stylish and better quality than Zara.  Most things can be negotiated, and Kate taught me how to say “Ka Ka Juseyo” (give me a discount) and that girl is amazing - if she doesn’t get a discount, she’ll make sure they throw in something for free.  I have to learn this technique before I go home.  The stores are in mall like fashion, grouped into categories on different floors.  Its a little too bad I’m about double the size of the average Korean woman because they do have some really cute clothes.  We bought T some new outfits, I hope he wears when we get home.  These malls are open until 5 AM, and open at 10 AM.  I wish they existed back home.  We got home around 2 AM (after our 6 PM flight) absolutely exhausted.

Temecula, California

Filed under: Fooooodz and Reviews!, Vacation — Shiz @ 2:01 am

So after our little tire mishap, we eventually made it onto the freeway and of course ran into evening traffic. We made it a tad late to the South Coast Winery Resort and Spa, and barely enough time to grab a bite to eat at their restaurant. It was a lovely place, roomy and each booth is large and private. T got a gorgeous prime rib and I got one of the best lambs I’ve had in a loooong time. We also shared a salad (came with a machego toast) and french onion soup.

The next morning we were awakened at 5:15AM to be picked up for our 5:45 AM hot air balloon ride with California Dreamin. We had absolutely no idea what we were in for, but we dressed warm. They picked us up in a van, then drove to two locations where they tested the wind with some balloons. There was a storm coming in, and so we were a tad worried… it turned out to be an absolutely amazing journey. The setup took less time than I thought, as we hopped into the basket and quickly flew away. I was shocked by how little we shook, it was a gentle ride. I didn’t realize how little control there was in direction of the balloon - you go up and down to catch different drifts in order to move in certain directions at certain velocities. Our pilot and co pilot were awesome… really knew the area to explain all the different areas we were flying over. I got some gorgeous shots as well given the clouds and the incoming storm. The landing was a little rough, and the rain started to come in a little. The best part was talking to the pilot and owner, Dave afterwards. He explained his history with ballooning, going back to high school and traveling around the world to balloon. His perspective of the world was a different one and after being in the air for about an hour, can see why.

They took us back to the room where we napped for the next several hours. I awoke to starvation as we first visited Maurice Car’rie Winery for lunch. Steph had shown me pictures and recommended their brie… and it was amazing. There was brown sugar baked in with it so for you sweet and salty lovers, it was heaven. T had chicken and I had another round of french onion soup and salad.

Stuffed, we then hit up wine tasting at Stuart Cellars, a cute place on a hill… I started to get a feel for Temecula wine country. Small and cozy, locally owned. Similar to Santa Barbara area (than Napa), but even more personal. There we picked up Malbec 2004 - Limited Reserve and Tatria 2002 - Limited Estate Reserve

We then visited Bella Vista Winery, previously known as Cilurzo, the oldest winery in Temecula. My professor had worked with the winery for her PhD dissertation and so I decided to stop in. Another small place with a larger tasting room. There we picked up 2 x Petite Sirah 2004 Late Harvest (OMG this was so yummy with Champagne), Petit Sirah Rose 2005, Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 (labeled Cilurzo).

We then visited Falkner Winery, which was next to Pinnacle Restaurant (its set up high so you have gorgeous views), recommended by Dave the pilot from the hot air balloon. Here, we picked up one bottle of 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon.

We then visited Ponte Winery, which was actually next to our place which had a large tasting room and fancy setting, something more of what you would expect in Napa. They had a huge selection and great history to the names of their wines. My favorite, the Graciela was named after the grandmother who now splits her time between San Diego and Italy. We picked up two bottles of the 2005 Graciela there.

We then drove back to South Coast, parked, and walked to our tasting room since there wasn’t much chance of us driving after this point. Most of the tasting rooms in Temecula give you about 5-6 tastings for about $6-$10, much more than what you get elsewhere. T and I shared, but even then I was really starting to feel the wine at this point. Here we bought Black Jack Port, Cabernet Rose 2005, Pinot Grigio 2006, 2 x Gewurtztraminer 2006. I think I fell asleep at this point, skipping dinner altogether.

Lunch the next day was at Ponte Winery. All seating was outside which was a little bit of a challenge, since it was windy and cold. The food was delicious though… so it was worth it. The bread came with this dipping sauce that was amazing. We had steamed mussels and clams with an olive tapenade, my salad had fried green tomatoes and T had a mahi mahi sandwich that he loved. For dessert, the homemade apple pie with candied rosemary was perfect.

To finish off the trip, we stopped by Hart Winery, where we were greeted by their mascot. There we purchased 2005 Syrah Rose and 2003 Zinfandel. We left Temecula after driving through old town, and stopping by a yummy cheese store for some die-for brie. What an amazing trip… we have nearly doubled our wine collection!

Stuck in Signal Hill

Filed under: Vacation — Shiz @ 5:26 pm

Life has its ups and downs. Considering we’re on our second vacation in a week, I’m pretty damn lucky. We were pretty excited, listening to music, driving down the 405 to meet Tienshiao’s brother for lunch at my favorite, Ramos House. That idea was pretty short lived as this big thing came barreling down the freeway - the car in front of us missed it, we ran right over it. Then we had a problem.

On the side of the 405 On the side of the 405 Our tow truck finally came....

What a pain it was to try and get over to the slow lane - to boot, there was no right shoulder to park on as there was another freeway merging together. We then followed two huge trucks to try and get off the freeway but they seemed stuck. We sat on the Pacific exit until some police came over and asked us to somehow move our car onto the shoulder further down the offramp. We moved the car around the trucks and onto the shoulder… turns out that the huge trucks lost its transmission on the freeway, which we ran over (and god knows who else ran over since it went rolling down the freeway after we ran it over).

We were fortunate, the guys in the trucks work for a large company here in the Long Beach area and they had a corporate account with Firestone just a few exits down. We called them and they had the tire in stock - and I called AAA for a flat bed tow (good thing I paid the renewal recently). They hooked us up with a free tire and the AAA got us there… so instead of Ramos House, we ate lunch at Subway and found internet at It’s a Grind so Tienshiao is a bit happier now (altho we ended up just replacing all 4 tires and they’re trying to sell us more crap over the phone). Stuck in Signal Hill. Ugh.

Now stuck in Signal Hill... random oil rig Found internet at a coffee shop, makes T very happy Lunch at Ramos House is now Lunch at Subway Where we were stuck at... Hopefully the car has new tires by now

Oh, a quick Pineapple update too… she seems to be doing quite well.

Haven’t been up to Mammoth in about 2 years… boy have some things changed! There’s a whole new Mammoth Village area which is very reminiscent of Whistler. This year was great - we went up with Stephanie, her husband Melvin, their friend Bharath (who has a daily photo blog using a film camera) and stayed in a little condo that was within walking distance of the Village. Gondolas left from the Village straight out to Canyon which was quite convenient. LOTS OF FUN, lots of wine, lots of good food and of course, lots of controversial conversation :)

12 Yr Old Soup. It's What's for Dinner

12 year old soup. It’s what’s for dinner. The expiry on the can said 95. Yes, we really ate it. Yes, we are still alive.

What I saw when I came home tonight....

What I saw when I came home from class tonight. The right side are my packages from Zappos. The left seems to be - banana delivery for my neighbor? This is the strangest thing I’ve seen yet.

Keen - my daily wear shoes Crocs Indigo Clarks

I have to rave about my Zappos.com order. Two nights ago while procrastinating doing homework, I started glancing through my Rick Steeves’ book and became infatuated with ordering my shoes for my summer trip to Europe. I started looking at REI, Adventure 16 but then I thought of going to Zappos, an online shoe store that one of my old running buddies told me about. I wanted three pairs - my main shoe, a pair of flip flops for the shower and other wet events, and a pair of comfy heels for the cruise and dancing. I started shopping and lo and behold! I found my dream team - Keen Malibu (yeah, the irony), Croc Athens and Clark Aria.  Good lord, they shipped yesterday and were here today, FOR FREE.  FREE SHIPPING!  The shoes and boxes (I keep my shoes in their boxes) came in perfect condition (not the crap you get when you go to Macy’s and its half used/worn already), and after following the sizing on the website (they will advise you if they come larger or smaller than size) these are perfect!  They are all so uber comfortable, and if for whatever reason I decide I don’t want them, return shipping is free as well!  I haven’t been this giddy over shoes since I was a kid.  My grandma would send me these slip on shoes with cartoon characters on them from Japan and I would be so attached to them that there are pictures of me sleeping with them in bed (unused of course).  T might have to share some bed space tonight!

Merry Christmas (Valet Lot Thieves) @ The Fairmont Hotel, Downtown San Jose

Filed under: Vacation, What the? — Shiz @ 12:25 am

The Fairmont Hotel

I held off on this one, hoping that there would be some positive resolution. Given the hotel’s unresponse, its my turn to tell the world what happened. Remember my road trip to see my sister during the holidays (Dec 22-23 to be exact)? Well we decided to spend it together over at The Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose for several reasons:

1) They are a 5 Star Hotel. This means luxury, pampering, and a great time with my sister.

2) The special stuff going on in downtown SJ for Christmas.

What you don’t expect is this: to have all of your Christmas presents stolen from your trunk.

You read that right. The Fairmont requires you to valet park your car. Self park is not an option. To boot, they charge you $24 a night. When they pulled my car up the next morning, all of my stuff from every nook and cranny had been pulled out and spewed all over the interior of the car (from the glove compartment, the middle console, the sides). My first fear was that my integrated ipod player was stolen, checked that and thank god it was there. I next checked the trunk for my spare (I know, some people laugh, but I often hear that spare tires are stolen at valet lots) and check, that was there. What was missing? Out of my trunk - digital camera + case + memory cards + batteries for my parents, my brand new ipod shuffle and earphones (I use special earphones for running, and I hadn’t even had a chance to USE the shuffle yet), DVD’s, garage door opener, and lord knows what else.

After writing a letter to the manager at The Fairmont directly, no response. The least they can do is return my $24 in parking charges. The AMPCO parking company? They want copies of receipts for insurance purposes. Who knows what’s next.

Given that there was no forced entry, the thieves either had access to my car keys OR my car was unlocked, either way was the responsibility of the AMPCO parking company (who claims to have 24 hour security in the lot) and the Hotel who gives me no other choice than to valet park my car.

So much for a Merry Christmas, this was more of a Bah-Humbug! This is just crap you don’t expect from a FIVE STAR HOTEL LIKE THE FAIRMONT.

Snow Summit

Filed under: Vacation — Shiz @ 10:43 pm
Welcome to Snow Summit Me and T At the base... Ugh... congestion! Beautiful views... That's Big Bear Lake..
A spur of the moment trip up to Snow Summit with Tienshiao, Matt and Jenna was fantastic!!!  We hadn’t been to a local mountain in years, and considering our last two snow trips were to Whistler and Mammoth, we were in for a size complex even given that all the runs were open at Snow Summit.  It’s amazing that even in SoCal we have fantastic skiing - 98% of their snow was man made.  I don’t know if it was because of the man-made-ness but the snow was so consistent and soft, and the gorgeous sunny day made it just that much better.  It got pretty crowded in the afternoon, just like any SoCal location.  We left at closing time, and battled the traffic all the way back to WLA playing random car games.

View of Blackcomb Mountain

Originally uploaded by Mashimia.

Monday was a flurry of wetness - first, snow. Wholy crap. Lots of it. Big fluffy things just falling from the sky. I had never seen anything like it (or at least as long as I can remember. I’m sure living in Minnesota for 8 years we saw things just like it). We read magazines and watched cable TV (one of my favorite things about a hotel) until our brains melted. Everyone needs days like these once in awhile :) We spent the remainder of the day dodging the rain and slush through Whistler Village looking at stores that carried the same Canada and Olympics gear (Whistler is hosting the 2010 winter games).

Yesterday was spent on the slopes - and what a glorious day it was! We went back to Whistler and experienced powder like never before. The packed portions, it was like skiing on powdered sugar - just SOFT. It was amazing. Then we hit patches of untouched powder and BAM! We were clueless on how to turn in that stuff - you don’t experience this type of powder (like thigh high!) in California.

We got in some great runs yesterday, only taking a short break for lunch and orange M&Ms. On one of our lift rides, we met a chatty man who proceeded to talk to us about how the skiing had been awesome the day before (the day with all the snow and rain). He mentioned “the worst day on the slopes is better than the best day in the office”. I described our difficulties in powder coming from Cali. He laughed and said how he’s been in Vancouver for 14 years and just recently moved out to Whistler. Its nice when people identify themselves because I’m terrible with accents and guessing where they come from. So T asked him about about Vancouver and he responded, “well I won the lottery last year, so I quit my job, moved out here and am now trying to create a part-time job for myself”

Come again?

Yes, the man said he had won the lottery.

He proceeded to tell us how he’s taken up digital photography as a hobby/job and so we started talking about cameras and what not. Our lift ride ended there, but my imagination was all over the place. The next few runs were consumed by my own thoughts of, “what would I do if I won the lottery?” Good lord.

We came home to defrost and relax. We cooked dinner in (there are little kitchens in our hotel rooms) and then - roasted marshmallows. The hilarious thing is, we didn’t have anything to roast them with. We walked down to the pharmacy in the Village and T said he would make it happen, and he did. We put together 5 tea candles on a plate, and roasted away… :P

Oh, if any of you come here, make sure to visit the Swiss guy at The Mountain Sweatshirt company, he seems a tad lonely.

We did a day each on Blackcomb and Whistler… can’t decide where we want to go for our final day up on the slopes tomorrow, but for now, today is our day off!

We’re staying at the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa… the place is cute! We have a little studio type room, but my favorite part is the BED. I have never slept on a bed so comfortable before.. King sized, lots of fluffy stuff and 5 pillows! As usual, poor T is on his side of the bed along the edge, and I take up the rest of the room enough for 3 people.

It’s snowing like crazy right now, but we’re going to venture out… :)
