A million… regrets?
I had given T’s mom a copy of A Million Little Pieces during the Holidays. I’ve read a few of Oprah’s Book Club books and they’ve been great, so I didn’t hesitate in picking this up for her. I’ve been listening to it on my commute off my ipod, 3 hours into it and I’ve realized in horror, this isn’t one of those books you give to your potential mother in law.
Maybe she won’t read it. Maybe there’s a happy ending.
Hrmm..
“Winfrey’s pick of “A Million Little Pieces” was unexpected since it overflows with vulgar and graphic language. It marked her abrupt and bracing return to the selection of contemporary authors after more than three years of choosing classics (and propelling those titles, often for months at a time, to the top of bestseller lists nationwide). Prior to tabbing Frey’s book, Winfrey’s other 2005 book club choices were three William Faulkner novels. Winfrey had selected books by John Steinbeck, Pearl Buck, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Leo Tolstoy, and Carson McCullers in the two prior years.”

I read this too, kind of by accident. I bought it for Jonni after she had heard about it on Oprah. I’m not sure she knew what it was about. She had brushed it aside, and I started reading it. I was really hooked. It was the first book in a long time that I actually took time to sit down and read, and actually finish. I think in some way anyone and everyone should be able to identify with this book in some way or another. It’s a book that much more about addiction, it’s about human spirit, and the fight not to give up. Right now I’m reading Oprah’s recently suggested book, “Night” by Elie Wiesel. It’s pretty sad to say that I’m hooked on her book suggestions. lol

I read A Million Little Pieces for our book club last month, it is NOT a good book to read during the holidays, that’s for sure! We decided to go entirely the other way next month, two light-hearted books…
Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons by Lorna Landvik http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780345472090#bio
and Confessions of Super Mom by Melanie Lynne Hauser http://www.melanielynnehauser.com

Hi Betty, thanks for the suggestions! Yes, I’ve definitely learned my lesson - read it before you buy it for someone else!!!
